Enmarcado dentro de las 22 millones de hectáreas que comprende la totalidad del desierto Sonorense se encuentra esta área.

En cuanto a la vegetación se presentan tres comunidades de vegetación:

Matorral desértico micrófilo – En el área de planicie, representado por especies como: gobernadora (Larrea tridentata), jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), sahuaro (Carnegiea gigantea) y palo fierro (Olneya tesota).
Matorral micrófilo sarcocaule – En las áreas de sierra, representado por: torote blanco (Bursera microphylla) y el sangrengado (Jatropha cardiofila).
Matorral alto espinoso – En el área de cañadas y arroyos.

En cuanto a la fauna, se encuentran especies de gran importancia cultural y económica, como el borrego cimarrón (Ovis canadensis mexicana), el venado bura (Odocoileus hemionus eremica) y el venado cola blanca (Odocoileus virginianus couesi). Presenta además una especie endémica de lagartijas conocida como iguana de las rocas (Sauromalus obesus) y uno de los únicos dos lacertilios venenosos del mundo, el monstruo de gila (Heloderma suspectum cinctus) de distribución limitada al estado de Sonora en México.

Actualmente (2011), uno de los proyectos más importantes que se realizan en esta reserva es la reproducción en semicatuverio del borrego cimarrón (Ovis canadensis mexicana), dentro de un encierro que comprende 1,000 hectáreas, para aumentar las poblaciones de Sierra El Viejo, que se han disminuido en el último lustro por diversas razones tanto antropogénicas como naturales.

Localización: En el Municipio de Pitiquito, Sonora, 70Km de Caborca y 40Km al Oeste de Puerto Libertad.
Superficie: 10, 375 has. Lomeríos, llanuras y elevaciones montañosas de 300 a 1030 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Clima: Desértico o muy seco semicálido, con ciclo de lluvias bianual.
Vegetación: Matorral desértico micrófilo en planicies, como gobernadora (Larrea tridentata), jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) y sahuaro (Carnegiea gigantea). Matorral micrófilo sarcocaule en sierra como torote blanco (Bursera microphylla) y el sangrengado(Jatropha cardiofila).
